What is Kodiak Challenge?

The Kodiak Challenge is oriented around a week long high adventure trek setting with leadership training and involvement woven into the adventure. The course prepares the Boy Scout or Venturing Scout to be a “servant leader” as they lead their peers.

The course is designed to be relevant to the participant’s life, to become internalized, is based on the servant leader concept, and is held in an outdoor setting, but most of all, it’s FUN!!

The course consists of five trek days where one leadership skill is learned per day, and a final component to teach reflection and evaluation of the Scout’s performance.

It pushes the boundaries of every Scout and will encourage trying new things that may be out of a Scout’s comfort zone.

The Kodiak Challenge is not about the trek; it’s about leadership skills.

Kodiak Challenge is not a classroom delivery of leadership skills. Rather, it allows every Scout’s to grow in their abilities as a leader during an adventure that tests them mentally and physically.

Who Can Attend?

Be 14 years old by June 1, 2012 Have a signed Parent Permission Form Be at least in high school – 9th Grade Be physically capable – BSA Medical Have completed the ILSC “Introduction to Leadership Skills Course” for Crews or Troop Complete the pre-trek leadership skills re-quirements of Vision and Planning – Sent after pre-registering with down payment.

Continue reading »]]> LEAVE NO TRACE MASTER EDUCATOR COURSE

Hosted by Theodore Roosevelt Council at Onteora Scout Reservation Livingston Manor, NY

August 5th – 10th 2012

While the youth are at Onteora for Specialty Week, Stay for the Leave No Trace Master Educator Course Leave No Trace Master Educator is the highest level of Leave No Trace training. The course will include two days of base camp training sessions followed by three days & nights of hands-on field experience on Onteora property and the surrounding state land. With Onteora as our base we offer the unique opportunity of a front country experience with a back country setting and atmosphere in the Catskill Mountains. A back country experience of three nights backpacking is an option for those interested. During the field experience each participant will have the opportunity to present a Leave No Trace topic that will be assigned to you weeks prior to the course.

Upon completion of this course you will have the skills and resources to use at home and in the outdoors. Share your new skills of Leave No Trace with the youth in your unit and others.

Participants must be a registered Scouter or Venturer and 18y/o or older as of Aug. 5, 2012.

Class A uniform and Current BSA Medical Form are required.

Course Fee $250. per person includes: materials, meals, accommodations, and membership with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.

We have released the long awaited Northeast Area 2 Interactive Map! Similar maps have already been available for Areas 3, 4, 5, and 6. To view this map, you can follow this link: www.nerventuring-bsa.org/areas/area-2/map-2/ or access it any time you wish by scrolling under the “Areas” tab, and then hovering over the “Area 2″ option which will present an extended button called “Area 2 Interactive Map” which you can click on and this will take you to the map’s page. We hope that this map can help the Venturers and Scouters within Area 2 to more effectively plan, execute, and become better acquainted with their Area. If this is your first time hearing about our interactive maps, check them out! We believe that they are an effective tool which youth and adults within our program, and BSA as a whole, can use.

We wish you the best during the Festival of Lights, but keep in mind that even though a scout is cheerful to participate in the celebration, he is also reverant and remembers the real reason for the holiday. Also, be sure to keep your eyes open for the Northeast Area 1 Interactive Map which will be the next map released in the series!
